Sampradaya by Varsha Vishwanath
SAMPRADĀYA - IN THE SHADE OF GREAT TREESA tribute to legacy, learning and the roots that anchor us.
We dance not alone.
Each movement we inherit, each rhythm we embody,
Are but echoes of those who came before us.
Sampradāya by Varsha Vishwanath is a journey through the timeless choreographies of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, tracing the thread that binds devotion, form, joy, and surrender. From invocation to pure movement, from playful expression to profound emotional depth, the repertoire reflects the evolving spirit of Odissi - rooted in tradition, alive in every breath.
This is a humble offering to the legacy we are privileged to belong to. We celebrate the teachings of our gurus, the strength of our roots, and the grace of a tradition that continues to nourish and inspire.
In the shade of the great trees, we find both refuge and inspiration.
Sampradāya is the 2nd edition of the Ekaharya series, curated by Indu Vijay and presented by Bhaskar's Arts Academy. The series hopes to raise the profile and enhance the visibility of the Odissi dance form in Singapore.
About Varsha Vishwanath
Varsha is a Singapore-based Indian classical dancer, trained in both Bharatanatyam and Odissi. Her practice is rooted in tradition and shaped by the community that nurtures her. Varsha’s dance journey began at the Temple of Fine Arts, Singapore, where she continues to be an active performer, educator, and choreographer.
While rooted in Bharathanatyam under the guidance of Kumari Lakshmi Krishnan, Varsha also trains in Odissi with Smt. Deepa Srivatsan, and is deeply inspired by the lyrical fluidity and the sculptural quality of the form. Her solo Odissi debut in 2022 marked a significant milestone in her artistic journey, unveiling new layers of expression and storytelling.
Varsha’s constant artistic seeking has led her to work with diverse institutions and artists, enriching her creative vocabulary and shaping her as a versatile, collaborative artist who moves fluidly between the classical and the contemporary.
For Varsha, dance is not just a way to move—it is her language, her community, and her canvas.
